Children of the City’s Chairman of the Board: Rocco Basile

What is it like to be the chairman of a well-known charity like Brooklyn New York-based Children of the City? Rocco Basile knows, and he absolutely cherishes every moment he spends working. He is associated with Children of the City for a long time, and though he now handles a thriving enterprise called as Basile Builders, Rocco takes enjoyment in giving assistance.

According to Rocco Basile, lack of education is the reason for most of the issues in this country, and he believes that training our youth, will help reduce crime, poverty and violence. That is exactly what Children of the City has been doing for three decades. Children of the City has been serving the underprivileged children in Sunset Park, Brooklyn since 1981, and the organization started as a children’s prevention outreach in the early years.

The distinguished charity has celebrated its Annual Benefit Gala last July 20, 2011 at their usual venue, which is at the LightHouse Chelsea Piers in the city of New York. The gala rejoiced the 30th anniversary of the charity and is a once a year fundraising event which a number of celebrities attend. The celebrities were celebrating along with founder Joyce Mattera (center of photo) 30 years of rescuing many of the city’s most at risk kids.

With the goal of eliminating poverty from the society, Children of the City attempts to seek contacts who are able to address this prevalent issue to those in need. People find help for financial and career guidance, social and life skills training, legal guardianship, and even more.

Mattera said, “Since 1981 our quest has never evolved: to reach at-risk inner-city youth and their families. Thirty years ago I saw these hurting children and knew I had to do everything to help. There have been a lot of superstars who have rendered assistance in rescuing numerous children in danger over the last years.

The services that the organization provides consist of educational support, counseling and mentorship. Just a few of its well-known local programs involve: Strong Minds and Strong Homes, which is a volunteer-based outreach;Create Success is an after school and summer program focusing on supporting each student’s academic success via tutoring and daily help with homework. In every month, there are thousands of children who are visited in addition to services that are rendered to more than a hundred per week.
